A springboard to the future – The DfA Career Talk Seminar 2025

Patenkinderseminar“The decisions you make today will determine your future. Seize the opportunities that come your way.” With these motivating words, Dr. Novestus Kosgei, a former sponsored child and now a doctor, addressed the 26 students in the graduating class of 2024. They all took part in the Dentists for Africa (DfA) Career Talk Seminar at the Sotik Pastoral Center from January 26 to 29.

Under the motto “The Power of Choices – Eyes on the Destination,” the seminar focused on the crucial decisions to be made after school. The students received valuable insights into career planning, financial independence, and mental health. Experts and DfA alumni shared their knowledge and their own experiences in an inspiring and practical way. Dr. Isa Rait, responsible for project development and fundraising at DfA Germany, was also there:

“The seminar made me realize how extreme the transition from school to further education is for Kenyan youth. They are suddenly on their own in a new and unfamiliar environment and are confronted with strangers from different ethnic (different tribes) and social backgrounds. Many of them only now become aware of their origins in truly poor circumstances. For some, this can make it difficult to integrate and not hide away.”

Dr. Tom Abuto, an expert in career development, emphasized how important it is to combine your own interests with the requirements of the job market. “Success starts with making the right decision – stay curious and flexible,” he advised.

Trainer Mary Perpetua not only taught strategies for financial independence, but also the importance of social networks and a balanced lifestyle. Sprungbrett der Zukunft  The 12 Dimensions of Life model in particular encouraged many students to think about their personal development.

One highlight was the contribution from Dr. Novestus Kosgei. As a former DfA mentee, he knows exactly what challenges young people face – and how they can overcome them. His appeal: “Mental strength and a good network are just as important as specialist knowledge.”

Exchange and community

Sprungbrett der ZukunftThis encouragement and knowledge transfer are of immense importance, as Dr. Isa Rait also discovered: “It was impressive to see how shy the young people were at the beginning of the seminar, sitting down in a long row at the table instead of facing each other to get to know each other and exchange ideas. We first had to point this out to them so that they could change their behavior. Most of them had only experienced frontal teaching with memorization and repetition in their schools in previous years. The transition to a self-determined life and learning, with all its advantages and disadvantages, is very difficult for these young people, especially since they often have no family members with whom they can exchange ideas.”

Sprungbrett der ZukunftIn addition to lectures and workshops, there were intensive discussion rounds in which participants could contribute their thoughts and questions. Particularly valuable: the exchange with alumni, who reported firsthand on their paths after school.

“The impression Novestus made with his speech to the young people was overwhelming. He comes from the same social background as the participants and has managed to break the cycle of poverty!” reports Dr. Isa Rait. “It was so motivating to see what others have made of their opportunities,” confirms one participant.

Conclusion: A complete success

The seminar demonstrated once again how important targeted support for sponsored children is for their future. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive: participants felt empowered, inspired, and well prepared for the next stage of their lives.

“These seminars are so important for explaining this new situation to them so that they can recognize and take advantage of the opportunities it offers and manage to think outside the box. At this stage in their lives, these young people need advice on career choices, personal problems and challenges, and the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with their peers,” summarizes Dr. Isa Rait.

DfA remains at her side – with mentoring, networking, and valuable prospects for the future.
